The Schengen-Lyzeum was opened 27 August 2007, starting with grade 5. Admission requirement is completion of grade 4 of a primary school. Students from Luxembourg can also be admitted two years later for grade 7 after they have finished primary school. However, it is preferred that attendance at the Schengen-Lyzeums begin at grade 5.
The Schengen-Lyzeum initially used the building of the Perl Junior High School, closed at the end of the school year 2011/2012. The dedication of the finished Schengen-Lyzeums took place in July 2011. The County Merzig-Wadern and the Grand Duchy Luxembourg each financed one-half the costs.
